"Finally, a day off!" Kevin shouted excitedly as he got up that Thursday morning. He had been working
all summer so far in hopes of making enough to buy a new car. He had to go back to school in the fall
but he would be damned if he was going to spend the entire summer working. "I gotta find out what that
thing was today." Was the only thing he said to his mother as he ran out the door to get into his beat
up old Mazda. His first stop was the police station to see if they had any leads yet, and with any luck
Sandra would be there.
"Nope, sorry, nothing here kid. Why are you so interested anyway? It's not like you're being charged
or anything." Was the only thing detective Larson had to say at the police station. And as an added
bonus Sandra was not there.
"Well, that's just great. Thanks anyway."
"Hey, kid, I wouldn't go around messing with stuff like this if I were you. You might attract attention
to yourself, unwanted attention, if you know what I mean." Larson sternly warned.
"Well it's good you're not me then." Was the only rebuke Kevin could think of.
"Hey detective could you help me with this over here." One of his secretaries called from over by a
file cabinet.
"Stupid kid doesn't know what he's getting himself into."
Meanwhile, outside, Kevin was trying to think of places to go to next. Then it hit him. Of course, Wood's
Hole oceanographic institute was only a little over an hour away! He could go ask his uncle who worked
there. Now if only he had gotten the number of Sandra's hotel room. He was sure she would be interested.
But, he knew a way to find out, and, there was a pay phone across the street.
"Hello Marriott hotel how can I help you?" The perky operator asked.
"Absolutely, I need the room number of a dear friend of mine, her name is Sandra. . ." Oh no, he thought
what was he last name. Matheson, no, it was definitely Matt something. Matthewson, no.
"Sir what's her last name?"
Of course it was, "Matthews, sorry."
"Ok, yes I have a Sandra Matthews in room 312 do want me to connect you."
"Yes if you could." At that moment the phone clicked over and the other line started ringing.
"Who is it?" A groggy voice asked.
"It's me, Kevin"
"Wha. . . How'd you get this number? Why are you calling this early anyway?"
"It's only nine in the morning and the front desk gave me the number, but that doesn't matter. How would
you like to go to Wood's Hole to find out what this thing is?"
"Yeah, sure, I have nothing better to do anyway. I'll meet you in the lobby in about an hour, ok."
"See ya then."

"Ready to go lazy?" Kevin asked holding a cup of coffee out for Sandra.
"Oh, thanks the coffee here is terrible." Sandra said as she got into Kevin's car. On the trip up they
both talked about what had happened.
"Why don't you tell me why you hate Rhode Island so much." Kevin inquired.
"It's not that I hate RI it's that I don't like small states. I grew up here, not too far from the beach
actually. I went to school where you went, most likely. I don't know what happened. I guess I just
outgrew the state. I needed a big city, and Providence just doesn't do. It's kind of hard to explain."
"I know exactly what you're talking about. It still amazes me how people here think driving across the
state requires overnight accommodations."
"You know you're pretty funny."
"I say it sarcastically, but with some people it's true. I could understand if we were in Montana or
something, but look at how small this state is. It's ludicrous."
"Oh well, it has its good points too"
"Yeah. This is the exit. We're almost there."
"Oh good this car was starting to feel a little cramped. So, who exactly do you know here?"
"My uncle Jon is one of the scientists that runs most of the routine tests here. He an expert marine
biologist and should know what this thing was. If he doesn't know it doesn't exist."
The decrepit old Mazda turned into the parking lot of the Wood's Hole Institute and both occupants got
out and started towards the door when suddenly a security guard stopped them in their tracks.
"Sir! That is a restricted area. What is your name, and your purpose here?"
"My name is Kevin Godspeed and this is my friend Sandra Matthews. We're here to see my uncle Jon
Godspeed."
"Godspeed, eh? You can pass but watch yourself."
The two companions entered the complex without seeing so much as one more guard. Kevin assumed they
probably didn't need it in here because of the guard in the parking lot accosting all passersby. It was
odd that the guard should be out in the lot and not in the building. Probably didn't want to disturb
all the scientists.
"Hey, Hey, Uncle Jon , long time no see how's it goin'?"
"It goes. What's up Kev?"
"The strangest thing happened the other day at the beach. There was this giant monster thing under the
water. It killed a girl, kind of. She actually died of the resulting shock."
"Yeah I know I heard it on the news. You probably want to know what it is huh? Well, I'd love to help
you out but I've never heard of anything even closely resembling it, sorry."
"Thanks anyway Uncle Jon. You know they really should tell those guards to lay off the intimidation.
It was a bit over the top."
"Guards? What guards?"
"That is odd."

The drive back to Rhode Island was rather uneventful. Kevin and Sandra hardly talked about anything.
Sandra was trying to figure out what this thing was, for some reason it had gotten her interest and she
was going to find out what it was. Her mind was made up then, when she got back to her hotel she would
phone her boss and gave him some story about her having some lingering suspicions about a possible
murder. She never lied to her boss so she wouldn't have any problem convincing him of a necessary
extension. Meanwhile, on the other side of the car Kevin was in a ver pensive mood. He was not
concerned so much with the situation at hand but with that security guard. He sure looked real enough,
but the way that Uncle Jon knew nothing about him, and on top of that, the guard was nowhere to be seen
on their way out. It was as if he had been waiting specifically for them.
"Kevin, I'll just get off at my hotel ok." Sandra brought up apparently at random during their trip
back.
"But it's only about five, how about dinner."
"Maybe tomorrow, tonight I have to get some more clothes. It looks as if I'll be staying a little
longer than expected."
"Yeah, sure. Tomorrow then?"
"Ok see you then"
With that Kevin drove away sill trying to figure out all that had happened today. Sandra might be done
looking today but he was just starting. The only question left was where to start. The piers might be
a good start. Maybe one of the fishermen had seen something unusual. First, he had to get some dinner.
Kevin stared down at a sorry looking bowl of pasta at a local Italian restaurant wondering why every
restaurant always managed to overcook pasta. Sitting there mulling over the present situation he
noticed something odd. A man that he saw earlier today was sitting two tables down from him. The odd
thing was that he couldn't place where he had seen him. It was the police station. No that wasn't
right. One of the nameless faces of a driver on the highway? Not really. Was he the security officer
he ha seen? He was about to go over and start a conversation with the man when his bill came. He
decided it would be better to forgo the pleasantries and head straight for the piers. He must be one
of those people who is always mistaken for everybody else. Only that and nothing more.

The piers were unusually quiet this night. There were a few fishermen though and maybe they would have
some valuable information. He asked around for over three hours and not a thing. Nobody had ever seen
what he was describing and they all thought he was a lunatic. That's when it happened. There was a
shadow on the wall on the side of him. He thought it might have been somebody to ask about the thing
he saw. But it wasn't a fisherman. It was he had seen in the restaurant, and the police station, and
the highway, and he was the random security officer.
Well that's all until I write more
